Rule By Punch Cards

or: How Computers Are A Menace to Liberty

By Hans Sherrer

This essay was published as a chapter in the anthology,  National Identification Systems: Essays in Dissent. (McFarland Publishing, 2003)

The essay explains from a historical perspective why computers are the greatest menace to human liberty yet created by mankind. Computers were conceived and first developed in the late 1800s as a device for the federal government to efficiently compile, analyze, and store data about Americans.  The very nature of the computer is to impair a person’s liberty by undermining their “right to be let alone.”

The Myth of Foreign Terrorism : the events of 9/11 weren’t the acts of terrorism they are portrayed as being

By Hans Sherrer

(Dec. 2002)

This 27,000 word essay explains why there is no definitional basis to justify blaming the events of September 11, 2001 on  foreign terrorism. In contrast,  the most conspicuous beneficiaries of  9/11’s events have been politicians,  police agencies, and defense and security oriented businesses associated with the federal government. It also discusses an important but little known episode in American history that helps to explain the  fervor with which influential people associated with the federal government have seized on the events of 9/11 to obliterate the Bill of Rights and the liberty of Americans.

By Hans Sherrer

Published in The Voluntaryist (Whole #113) (Second Quarter 2002.)

The Illusion of Tax Evasion

By Hans Sherrer

(1998, revised 2002)

To engage in tax evasion, a man or woman must engage in the deliberate evasion of a consciously and voluntarily accepted legal financial obligation.  An activity may look, taste and smell like tax evasion – but the appearance of an activity doesn’t legally define that activity as tax evasion

Hooper Bay Is The Only Civilized City In The U.S.

By Hans Sherrer

(Feb. 2006)

Hooper Bay, Alaska is one of the U.S.’ most remote communities. The police don’t have firearms, but many Hooper Bay residents do. So Hooper Bay’s police must approach all situations with a response that diffuses its actual or potential volatility – instead of the brute force method used in cities where law enforcement officers have firearms readily available.

There is No Private Property in the United States

By Hans Sherrer

(June 2007)

Iin the U.S. a title to property or other forms denoting “ownership” effectively constitutes a transferable long-term lease with the federal and/or state government conferring certain limited privileges of its use and tenancy. Any property “owner” who does not comply with taxing and use requirements is subject to serious sanctions that can include the loss of their tenancy rights.  So contrary to the commonly held belief, there is no private property in the U.S.

The Articles of Confederation Was Much More Pro-Freedom Than The U.S. Constitution

By Hans Sherrer

(July 2011)

The Articles of Confederation that was a treaty between the 13 independent nations that seceded from Great Britain in 1776, was based on the idea of neighbors maintaining friendly relations amongst themselves for their mutual benefit, while in contrast the U.S. Constitution that replaced it in 1789 is based on the idea of a bully roaming a neighborhood who will punch you out if you don’t do what he says.

Why Dissolution Is Better Than Secession

By Hans Sherrer

(August 2009)

Unlike secession, dissolution is not tied to reliance on a political regime or structure. While secession amounts to arranging of who sits in the chairs of political power wielded over a geo-physical area, dissolution eliminates those political chairs and the positions of those who occupy them.

The State Is A Serial Rapist

By Hans Sherrer

State Financial Impositions

By Hans Sherrer

(October 2009)

Polices that directly and indirectly transfer wealth from those who create or otherwise own it to the State, are destructive to society and the economic well-being of the people affected.  The surest path to maximizing prosperity is to eliminate the State impositions that interfere with the ability of a person to use their wealth as they see fit – and not as the State decrees.
