"Falsely confessed to a double murder after being subjected to an "oppressive" police interrogation. He retracted his confession and the evidence against him was so weak that he was only convicted by a 10-2 majority. Two of the 12 jurors voted to acquit him, and they were correct in their doubts. Jim Nichol, Peter Fell's solicitor said: "He may be a crackpot, he may be crazy, he may be all these things - and probably was in 1982 - but a murderer he was not and never has been."
