Summary of Case:

Wrongly convicted in February 1997 of shooting a friend after a two hour bench trial, based on his confession to the crime. Ricky Cullipher was sentenced in January 1998 to 9 years imprisonment. In 2001 a federal judge granted Cullipher's writ of habeas corpus based on evidence that his lawyer was incompentent by not presenting evidence that he did not commit the shooting and was impaired by his drug addiction. The prosecution declined to retry Cullipher and dropped the charges. He was released on May 24, 2001 after more than four years of imprisonment.
